One Presentation Away From Changing Your Business

Mar 19, 2026

An Empower World reflection inspired by Empower World's Coaching and Leadership Podcast conversation with international speaker, trainer, and coach Colin Boyd, "Speak So People Lean In: Present with Purpose, Confidence and Impact."

Coaches, leaders and purpose-driven professionals who present regularly often intend to offer value and support others through workshops, webinars, presentations and meetings. Their message may reach those who may not require their in-depth services or it may attract the appropriate people for deeper collaboration. Yet, despite genuine intentions, their communication doesn’t fully translate into the impact they had hoped for.

Presenters often share a common experience which may go like this:

  • They invest time thoughtfully preparing their material, drawing on their expertise and desire to support others.
  • They aim to offer genuine value, sharing ideas, frameworks and insights to support the audience.
  • When they conclude, the feedback is positive and the presenter feels they have contributed something meaningful.
  • And despite the positive response, the outcome they hoped for rarely materialises.
  • Very few people take the next step, enquiries are limited and follow-up conversations do not happen.

The work that could potentially help people further remains unexplored. For many professionals who care deeply about the impact they want to create, this gap between appreciation and action can feel confusing.

According to presentation expert and coach Colin Boyd, the challenge is rarely that presenters are not sharing enough value. In fact, often they share too much information, which becomes overwhelming.

As Colin explains, “Most people think they need more information. But the truth is they don’t need more information: they need to make a decision.”

This distinction shifts how we think about presentations entirely.

Moving From Over-Teaching to Support Making a Decision

Coaches and leaders often feel a responsibility to ensure their audience walks away with practical takeaways, which can lead to presentations filled with detailed strategies, step-by-step processes and numerous frameworks.

While this approach is well intentioned, it can unintentionally create a different outcome. Instead of feeling inspired and motivated, audiences may switch off or become confused by the volume of information they have received.

Faced with many new ideas to implement, they often decide to try these strategies on their own first. The decision to seek deeper support is postponed, sometimes indefinitely.

Colin describes this dynamic succinctly: “An overwhelmed prospect won’t buy. A motivated prospect will.”

In other words, the role of a presentation designed to attract clients is not simply to teach everything the presenter knows. Its purpose is to assist people in gaining clarity, seeing new possibilities and feeling motivated to move forward.

A Different Way to Think About Promoting Your Services

For many professionals in coaching and leadership development, the concept of selling can feel uncomfortable. It may appear misaligned with the desire to serve others or create meaningful transformation.

However, Colin offers a reframing that resonates strongly with values-based businesses. “Selling,” he explains, “is simply opening up a space for someone to commit to themselves on the next level.”

From this perspective, inviting someone to work with you is not about persuading them to spend money. Instead, it is about presenting an opportunity for growth and allowing individuals to decide whether they are ready to take that step.

When people invest in coaching or leadership development, they are not only purchasing a service. They are making a commitment to their own development and to the outcomes they want to create in their lives or organisations.

Seen through this lens, the role of a presentation becomes clearer. It is not about convincing or persuading; it is about creating the conditions in which people can make a thoughtful and aligned decision.

Understanding What Creates Value

Another insight Colin emphasises is that presenters often misunderstand what audiences perceive as valuable. Many assume that value lies primarily in practical instruction. While practical guidance can certainly be useful, it is not the only form of value a presentation can offer.

Often, the most powerful moments occur when someone’s perspective changes. As Colin notes, “Value is not just practical steps. Value is reframing someone’s perspective. Value is removing a belief that’s holding them back.”

When people see their challenges in a new light, they often gain clarity about what is possible and what support might help them move forward. In this way, a presentation that shifts thinking can be far more impactful than one that simply delivers detailed instructions.

The Importance of Storytelling

Storytelling also plays a significant role in how audiences connect with a speaker’s message. Many presenters begin by sharing their origin story - the journey that led them to their profession and the experiences that shaped their expertise.

While these stories can build credibility, Colin suggests that presenters consider a more focused narrative that he calls a 'conversion story.' A conversion story highlights the transformation that the presenter helps others achieve. Rather than describing only how someone entered their field, it illustrates the journey from challenge to change.

When shared effectively, this type of story answers three important questions that audiences are often asking internally:

  • Are you like me?
  • Can you guide me?
  • Is there a path I can follow?

When listeners recognise their own experiences in the story being told, trust naturally develops, and they begin to imagine their own potential transformation.

Creating Desire Rather Than Overwhelm

Another key element in effective presentations is the ability to create a desire for change. Desire does not arise from overwhelming people with details. Instead, it emerges when individuals can clearly imagine a future version of themselves.

For example, rather than explaining every step required to become a confident speaker or leader, a presenter might invite the audience to reflect on how their professional life might feel if they were able to communicate their ideas with clarity and confidence.

This approach encourages listeners to step into a vision of what is possible, allowing them to experience the emotional and practical benefits of change before deciding how they wish to pursue it.

Choosing Faith Over Fear

Even highly successful speakers continue to experience moments of uncertainty about their message, their stories and their presentations. Doubt is a natural part of sharing one’s work publicly.

However, through his work with thousands of experts and leaders, Colin has observed a consistent pattern among those who create the greatest impact: they learn to focus less on their fears and more on the purpose behind their message.

As Colin reflects, “At the highest level, people decide to listen to the faith in their heart rather than the fear.”

They trust the value of what they offer and allow that conviction to guide their communication.

A Closing Reflection

For coaches and leaders committed to supporting growth in others, the ability to communicate their message clearly and authentically is an important part of expanding their impact.

Sometimes the difference between being heard and being overlooked is not the amount of knowledge shared, but the clarity with which we invite people to consider their next step.

And perhaps, as Colin suggests, the transformation we hope to create for others may be only one well-crafted presentation away in the service of others.

Below are reflective questions to consider as a coach and leader:

  • When you share your work with others, are you focusing more on giving information… or on creating the space for someone to see their next step?
  • How might your presentations change if their purpose was not simply to inform, but to support people in making a meaningful decision about their own growth?
  • If your next presentation truly helped someone commit to the next level of their potential, what would you do differently in how you share your message?
