In a world full of distraction and noise, perhaps more than ever, where we become increasingly bombarded with more and more information - deep listening is a rare and powerful gift that we can give to another.
And it’s not just about hearing the words someone says: it’s also about being with them in a way that assists them to feel seen, safe, and heard.
One of the most transformative aspects of coaching, and in any relationship, is rooted in trust and the experience of someone truly listening.
When someone listens to another so deeply and with so much presence, it can create a huge shift in energy, openness and perspectives. It allows someone to be heard more clearly and opens up the opportunity for them to access their own wisdom.
A common misconception is that we need to solve problems or provide answers for others who are experiencing a challenge. But deep listening often requires the opposite: to let go of the impulse to fix or advise, and instead, simply hold space for another to share what is coming up for them in that moment.
Listening to someone speak in a way that allows for moments of silence, without filling the silence and responding immediately, allows that person to process and reflect more deeply and discover something new for themselves.
When we, as coaches or leaders who coach, let another explore their own thoughts, they are able to go deeper just because we are holding space for them: not interrupting their thoughts with words, noises or even movement. We are there for them: trusting and believing they will find their own answers.
That moment of deep presence is more often more powerful than any solution we could offer.
Deep listening is curiosity. Not curiosity that interrogates, but curiosity that invites our reflective partners to uncover their 'blind spots' in their thinking - their unconscious awareness in relation to their thoughts, emotions, habits.
When we listen from a place of non-judgmental curiosity, allowing our reflective partner to explore their own ways of thinking, being and doing as a fellow human being, people feel safe to open up - not perform, not impress, not hide. People can be authentic, vulnerable, transparent and courageous.
It’s tempting to think of listening as a technique. But at Empower World, we believe deep listening is a way of being.
It’s not just a coaching tool. It’s something that shifts the quality of all relationships: whether you’re a leader, a parent, a partner, or a friend.
This kind of presence can impact our work and personal lives. Embodying it can change how we show up in all my conversations: with our colleagues, family, friendships, acquaintances and communities.
This is the ripple effect of deep listening. It changes not only how others feel—it changes us.
When we truly listen, we quiet the noise in our own minds. We learn to notice when our attention drifts, when our ego wants to jump in, when we’re preparing our response rather than being present. These are all natural, but the beauty lies in returning to presence, over and over again.
As we say at Empower World, “There’s this heart energy when you’re deeply listening. You’re not in your head. You’re in your body, your heart. And it is felt.”
And that type of presence is powerful. It can move someone to open up, expand their ability to process and reflect, and dig deep into their resourcefulness, creativity and wisdom.. It can shift a conversation. It can change lives.
What if today, you chose to listen not just with your ears, but with your whole presence? Listening with your mind, heart, body, emotions, energy and intuition? Who might you impact, simply by being fully with them in support of what is coming up for them, both their challenges and opportunities?
Let that question guide your next conversation. You may be surprised by what unfolds.
