This newsletter is inspired by Empower World's conversation with Monia Pyraki, Personal Growth Advocate and Life & Business Coach, on our Coaching and Leadership Podcast: Episode 254 - The Skills Are for Life: How One Coach Rebuilt Everything - Twice.
There's a moment most of us know. It's not a dramatic crisis. It's quieter than that. It's the moment you realise that the life you've carefully built - the career, the routine, the community, the identity - no longer fits the circumstances you find yourself in. And you're wondering: Do I still have what it takes?
This is a common human experience and question we might ask ourselves. And it's also one of the most important moments of potential growth available to us - if we're willing to meet it honestly.
The gap nobody warns you about
We live in a world that celebrates arrivals. The new job. The business launched. The credential earned. The goal achieved. What we talk about far less is when life shifts again, as it always does. A move. A loss. A change you didn't choose. Suddenly, the ground you stood on isn't there anymore.
For coaches and leaders, this can be quietly devastating. You've invested deeply in developing yourself, what you do, your practice, your teams and organisation, your community, and your experiences. And when the floor drops out from under you, the gap between knowing something intellectually and feeling it in your bones becomes very real, very fast.
Here is what we've observed across thousands of hours of coaching and training: the greatest predictor of resilience isn't the absence of adversity. It's the depth of your relationship with yourself: your self-awareness, your clarity of values, and your capacity to ask a better question when everything in you wants to catastrophise.
In other words, the very skills that coaching develops within yourself.
What starting over actually looks like
Monia Pyraki had built a thriving coaching and wellness practice in Doha, Qatar. Clients she loved. A community that energised and inspired her. She had momentum in everything she was doing.
Then she moved to Zurich with six-month-old twins, no network, no community, and a completely different culture. Everything she had built was suddenly thousands of miles away.
"It was a very lonely journey. It was hard. But all the tools I'd learned really helped me ask myself questions." Monia shares.
And then she started to create her new life with what she already had. "I started with simple practices. A gratitude practice. A chat with someone from the peer group. And that helped me, one step at a time, find my way again."
It wasn't a restart, she says. It was a continuation - in a different form. And eventually, by combining coaching, wellness and her background in events, she rebuilt a successful practice working with global brands including Google, Estée Lauder and Lululemon.
As Monia experienced and shared: "Those skills are a foundation for life. No matter where you are. No matter how many times life changes."
The thing hiding in plain sight
What strikes us about Monia's story is this: the skills that carried her through weren't new skills she found in the crisis. They were skills she had already built - and chose to apply.
Self-awareness and a deep understanding of her values supported her ability to ask herself a better question rather than spiral. The capacity to be honest about what was hard without being swallowed by it.
Monia has carried these skills far beyond her business into the everyday fabric of her life. For example, when her eight-year-old twins had a conflict at school, she responded not by telling them who was right or wrong, but by asking questions. Their teacher, who witnessed the conversation, turned to her afterwards and said: "I'm impressed. You didn't lecture them - you just asked questions." In doing so, Monia helped her boys think for themselves, take ownership of their experience, and find their own way through.
On timing, comfort zones and the one life we have
As Monia wisely shares: "It's always easy to postpone decisions. To say, I'm good, or to stay in the comfort zone because it feels safe. But magic happens when we get out of it - when we trust our intuition and connect with what matters to us."
We hear this often. The timing isn't right. I'm not ready. Maybe next year. And underneath those words, almost always, is something more honest - a fear that the leap won't be worth it, that the investment won't pay back, that we might not be enough.
"There is never the right time. Just take the first step. You don't need to make huge decisions. You just need to start. And then the decisions come in a very natural way," says Monia.
She goes on to explain that 'the doors' were always there. She just couldn't see them until she invested in knowing herself more deeply.
A question to close with
We all carry more resourcefulness than we realise, more resilience than we've ever needed to fully draw on and more capacity to begin again than the fear of starting over would have us believe.
So we leave you with this: What door has been there all along that you haven't quite let yourself see yet?
