Team coaching involves the coach/es working with a group of people in which team coaching provides members of the team to maximize their potential using the core competencies of coaching (ie listening to the system, asking questions, providing feedback and reflection space) to tap into the collective wisdom of the team. Some of the areas that could be worked during team coaching include:
A team coach finds ways for the team members to gain new conscious awareness about itself (beliefs, practices, behaviours, attitude, processes) and support to put in place new supportive behaviors in relation to its goals. There perhaps is some Individual work with team members in an assignment, but it’s always related to improving overall team effectiveness.
Team dynamics are often complex, but by holding the space, being present with what is arising in the team and getting curious with what is present can lead to much greater conscious awareness and lead to new actions and desirable outcomes: a high performing team.
Coaches must be aware that there are potentially very complex organizational dynamics in which the team exists, which will support the team to gain clarity about in support of their goals. Getting curious about the systems within the team operates can lead to breaking down of barriers and the creation of empowering beliefs and new actions in alignment with the team goals.
Boundary setting and agreeing ways of working is important to ensure expectations are clear and psychological safety has been created to ensure courageous, vulnerable conversations can be had with the view of continuing to learn and grow from each other. This is best practice to support high functioning teams.
The coach also must recognise it is working with a minimum of three connected areas of relationships ie individuals, the team/s and the organisation.
Team coaching involves working with a complex system and results may take time. By partnering with the team over the long term, it can support the team to introduce new ways of being over the long term as it moves to becoming a much more effective team.
